Harbour on the Cow Head Peninsula

The Cow Head Peninsula

Cow Head consists of two areas: "Winterside" and "Summerside."

Summerside "Head" is where the fishing took place, and in the winter most people, not all, moved over to the mainland, "Winterside."

Under the Resettlement Program in 1960, people moved to the Winterside permanently. The Peninsula "Head" is still used for fishing activities during summer months.

The Peninsula is a great area for the adventurous explorer. The Cow Head Tourism Committee was successful in getting a project to develop this area. A trail has been developed and it is a hikers heaven with a breathtaking view of the mountains. An amphitheater  was also built. When sitting in the seats of this amphitheater the audience are not only impressed with the professional talents of the Gros Morne Theater Festival cast but they are also awed by the surrounding landscape.

The geology of this area offers hours of discovery and enjoyment. Exploring our beautiful peninsula you will discover sea caves, sea arches, limestone breccias, mantle and crust deformation.

Cow Head is often chosen by Memorial University as the site for their geologist students.

The vegetation in the area is varied. There are different sections: dry areas, marshlands, and along the cliffs and rocky coastline vegetation.

Tuckamore is commonly seen close to the shoreline. The wind currents have stunted the growth of these trees (usually juniper) and they are short and twisted. Other types of vegetation close to the shore are black spruce, hairy rock cress, primrose, oyster leaf.

Different types of vegetation can be viewed inland and in the wet areas. They are Labrador Tea, crackerberry, balsam fir, bakeapple/cloudberry, marsh marigold, cowslip, alpine marsh violet, cranberries, raspberries, and dew berries.

Bird watchers will love this hike. The Cow Head Peninsula has a variety of birds and mammals that just might catch your attention. Wow, if you’re lucky you might spot a yellow rumped warbler, herring gull, black-capped chickadee, an arctic tern, common tern, greater black-beaked gull, snowshoe hare and a moose.
